Donya & Dejan's Wedding at Mamula Island, Montenegro

Three custom gowns, a private island fortress in the Bay of Kotor, and a destination that is quietly rewriting the European wedding map. WedLuxe goes inside Donya Dardmand and Dejan’s Mamula Island celebration.

For years, the European destination wedding circuit has followed a familiar route — the Amalfi Coast, Santorini, Tuscany, the South of France. Each one beautiful, each one proven, and each one increasingly familiar. But a quieter destination has been making its case along the eastern Adriatic — and with Mamula Island by Banyan Tree officially opening this week as the brand’s first European resort, Montenegro has arrived in the luxury wedding conversation in a way that feels permanent.

Influencer Donya Dardmand and her partner Dejan were among the first to celebrate within its stone walls. Their wedding is a compelling early chapter in what looks set to become one of the most sought-after destination stories in luxury travel and bridal.

The Venue

Mamula Island sits at the entrance to Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – on its own secluded islet in the Adriatic Sea. The journey begins with a private boat transfer across the bay, which sets the tone immediately. What awaits is a 19th-century fortress, painstakingly restored over seven years, its original stone archways and heritage features preserved and reimagined into one of the most architecturally distinctive luxury retreats in Europe. Every room faces the sea. Golden hour here turns the stone walls amber and the water to glass. It is, in short, a setting that requires almost no embellishment to feel extraordinary.

The venue offers full island buyout for weddings and private events — meaning the entire fortress, open-air terraces, gardens, spa and beach become yours alone. There are very few places in Europe that can offer that.

The Fashion

Donya wore three custom gowns across the celebration — two by fashion designer Dodona Avdiu (@dodonaavdiuofficial), known for her quietly bold approach to bespoke bridal, and one by Dubai-based Maison de Couture, Raghad Shubbar (@styleme.2019). The multi-gown approach, increasingly the signature of the fashion-forward bride who refuses to let a single look define the day, felt entirely at home against the architectural drama of the venue. Each gown marked a distinct chapter of the celebration: the ceremony, the reception, and the evening beyond.

The Day Itself

What photographer Laura Matzen (@lauramatzenphotography) captured across the day is the kind of imagery that reminds you why destination weddings exist in the first place. The ceremony unfolded against the fortress stone and open Adriatic sky — florals by Yastreb Decor (@yastrebdecor) weaving softness into the architecture without competing with it. As golden hour arrived, the island did what it does best: the walls warmed, the light turned liquid, and the portraits became something else entirely. There is an intimacy to the photographs that feels at odds with how extraordinary the setting is – every detail considered, every moment unhurried. The quartet from Allegria Quartet (@allegria_quartet) carried the ceremony with a quiet elegance that matched the day’s mood perfectly. It was, in every sense, a celebration that knew exactly what it wanted to be.

The Bigger Picture

Montenegro has long existed at the edges of the European luxury conversation — quietly beautiful, deeply unspoiled, and largely undiscovered by the world of destination weddings. That feels as though it is changing. With Mamula Island by Banyan Tree now entering its first full season as Europe’s newest flagship luxury resort, something that once felt like a well-kept secret is beginning to find its moment. Donya and Dejan simply arrived a little ahead of the rest of us — and in doing so, left behind a set of images that feel less like a wedding feature and more like a love letter to a place the world is only just beginning to know.
