Bernard Lara and Qiuyu (Emily) Li’s story (featured in Issue 35 of WedLuxe Magazine, Canada), began quietly, long before they ever met. They shared the same personal trainer, yet never crossed paths at the gym. He trained in the mornings. She went later in the day. It wasn’t until their trainer invited them both to a group dinner that they finally met in person. A simple exchange of Instagram handles followed, and from there, everything unfolded naturally. After dating for just over a year and a half, their relationship had grown into something certain and deeply rooted.

Bernard proposed in a way that was as thoughtful as it was unforgettable. Under the guise of a casual evening downtown, Emily was led to Bernard’s Japanese restaurant, unaware that every detail had been carefully planned. Family and friends had been quietly brought together behind the scenes, all in on the surprise. When Emily was finally invited inside through the back entrance, she stepped into a beautifully orchestrated proposal surrounded by the people they love most, a moment that would become one of the happiest memories of her life.

Held on June 28, 2025, at One King West One King West Hotel & Residence is truly one of Toronto's most magical wedding spots.... More | Message in Toronto, the wedding was conceived as a fully immersive homage to the glamour of the Roaring Twenties. From sleek black metal invitations that replaced traditional paper stationery to a richly layered aesthetic throughout the event, Fleur Weddings & Events Fleur Weddings is a boutique wedding planning company specializing in creating extraordinary celebrations for Asian... More | Message together with floral and event design by INFINITUDE crafted an experience that transported guests into a world of 1920s elegance, exclusivity, and modern sophistication.

WEDDING DAY STYLE
Emily wore two couture gowns by Movous COUTURE, a China-based fashion house, each offering a distinct expression of Gatsby-era glamour. Bernard wore a custom three-piece suit by Aviva Knight, designed and tailored to reflect the aesthetic, paired with handcrafted custom shoes.

SECRET SOCIETY
Tucked behind the grand doors of One King West, the historic bank vault set the tone for a celebration steeped in Gatsby-era intrigue. Once a place where fortunes were secured, its steel-lined interiors now frame a moment of hidden glamour, secrecy, and indulgence, perfectly echoing the spirit of the Roaring Twenties.

THEATRICAL FLAIR
The atmosphere was set by greeters and performers dressed in lavish costumes reminiscent of the Jazz Age. Showgirls welcomed guests with trays of rolled “newspapers” announcing the couple’s marriage and offered artisanal chocolates, adding both theatrical flair and interactive fun. Every detail was carefully curated to transport guests into the Gatsby era—from the dazzling feather headpieces and sequinned gowns of the performers to the bride’s own dramatic black couture gown, shimmering under golden light.

This wedding was a true homage to the opulence and glamour of the Roaring Twenties, designed as a fully immersive Gatsby inspired celebration. From the moment guests arrived, they stepped into a world that felt like stepping back into 1920s high society.

JAZZ AGE COMES TO LIFE

Highlights of the evening included a champagne tower framed by velvet drapery, a custom scent bar where guests could create their own perfumes, and choreographed dance performances along with a live Jazz band. During the dinner, Emily surprised guests with a short performance, followed by a playful dance by Bernard alongside invited dancers, instantly lifting the energy in the room.

Many of our friends said it didn’t feel like attending a wedding but rather stepping into a glamorous party straight out of the Gatsby era.
