Kate Wu first met Louisa Liao at a group gathering amongst Toronto’s Chinese LGBTQ+ community in 2011 but they didn’t begin dating until 2018. “I knew from the start that she was the kind of girl I was looking for,” shares Kate. Before she started dating Louisa, Kate had never worn much makeup. When she found out that Louisa was finally single, she signed up for one-on-one makeup lessons with her — Louisa is a talented hair and makeup artist and founder of LOUMINOUS MAKEUP. Before the tutorials could take place, Kate invited Louisa to brunch, and taking note that Louisa ordered orange juice, she brought some for her to take home the second time they hung out. At that point, Louisa had no idea that Kate might be interested in her — until a friend hinted that there might be a literal “orange crush.”
Four years later, they got engaged at home. Ever the prankster, Kate was joking with Louisa about never having been proposed to, so she cleverly convinced Louisa to say the words. In response, Kate replied with a genuine “Yes!”
“I trick her every time,” jokes Kate. “It always works. It’s like our everyday life.”
Kate and Louisa were married at a friend’s 36,000 sq. ft. private estate in Toronto, Ontario, on June 11, 2022 with

providing event planning and design. Taking inspiration from the couple’s dating history, orange-infused floral and event decor for the sun and sunshine-themed affair were provided by INFINITUDE DESIGN. The brides each carried a bouquet that reflected their different personality. One was an orange heart-shaped bouquet, the other an arrangement of primarily yellow flowers, yet both included peonies to represent their common interests.
Kate and Louisa wore custom wedding dresses designed by CHRISTINE LAU of CHICTOPIA. The dress code for the wedding was shining, bright, colorful, and hot!
As a makeup artist by trade, Louisa handled the makeup artistry for Kate and herself — Kate jokes that she insisted upon having the premium package for their wedding date! The rest of the team at LOUMINOUS MAKEUP provided hair styling services for the brides and their bridal party
The couple’s pets were featured on a welcome sign provided by ONION SISTER CREATIVE.
The wedding band played “Cool, Cool Water” with musician DENIELLE BASSELS on vocals during the couple’s first look.
INFINITUDE DESIGN CANADA provided the floral design, arches, cande- labras, and gold stands for the wedding. Over 350 coral sunset peonies were used throughout the wedding’s floral arrangements. A pair of custom-painted gold arches stood ten and eight feet tall at the wed- ding ceremony and reception, covered in sunshine-coloured blooms. The florals built up from the bottom, signifying the power of life.
The ceremony was officiated by REVEREND GERALD J. TAILLEFER.
The bridal party included decade-long friends wearing customized dresses from THENDRESS and suits from SHEIN and ZARA.
FLEUR WEDDINGS INC created a seating chart using envelopes that included a fun sign-in activity. Guests were asked to take polaroid photos and write their best wishes on the backs of the films, then take their thank you notes from the envelopes and replace them with the polaroid.
The newlyweds sat at an acrylic sweetheart table decorated with fragrant fresh-cut citrus.
A stylized group photo session was a highlight of the cocktail reception. Special guests included founder of RE- JUUV MEDI SPA, DR. SHAWN SEIT, and YouTubers and Instagram influencers OH EMMA and REGINA KNOWS.
The couple’s untraditional wedding cake was inspired by oil paintings and the forms of pottery sculptures. Louisa wanted the cake to have the characteristics of contrast and strength, which event planner Erin Zhang of FLEUR WEDDINGS INC recognizes as symbolic of Louisa’s independence in life and the freedom she pursues.
After the cake cutting, the couple had a second reception entrance, leaving guests doing a double take as both brides entered with surprise haircuts provided by Sandy and Jamie of AP HAIR SALON — cut and styled in just twenty minutes! Both brides wore suits from ZARA.
Dva, a friend of Louisa’s, was the MC for the evening. The dinner included buttermilk fried chicken, miso black cod, ribeye steak, herb-crusted lamb chops, and squid ink pasta served by FORREST LIU CATERING.
A surprise dance party from the bridesmaids and best men rounded out the festivities. Working long hours in the wedding industry, Louisa loves snacks. Thermal lunch boxes filled with her favorites were given as guest takeaways.
