. We recently visited this magical 600-year-old historical gem, and honestly, it mesmerized us from the moment we arrived.
Sir Geoffrey Luttrell bought the castle lands back in 1210, while on a mission for King John. Building did not begin until 1429, though. That year, King Henry IV granted landowners the right to build fortified houses. One of those houses still forms part of the castle today. The aristocratic Luttrell family then held the estate until 1811. In total, there have only been six owners over the centuries. One of them was the world-famous Guinness family. They owned the property between the 1910s and 1950s, and they shaped much of its story.
This castle has always been a playground for the rich and famous. Over the years, guests have included Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Fred Astaire, Paul Newman, and Ronald Reagan. Here is a fun fact for the starry-eyed among us. Luttrellstown also hosted David and Victoria Beckham’s wedding back in 1999!
Beyond the castle itself, the estate grounds include a world-renowned golf course and clubhouse. Staying here is an experience in its own right. After all, you do not often get an entire castle to yourself! The 20 suites carry names like “The Duchess of Cumberland” and “The Queen Victoria,” so no two rooms feel alike. Still, they all feel regal, thanks to modern furnishings and luxury touches throughout. You can also browse the property’s history on the official castle website.
If walls could talk, this castle would tell some incredible stories. On the day we wrapped our photoshoot, a full rainbow appeared in the field behind us. It arrived right after we snapped the final photo. Honestly, it felt like the perfect closing chapter. Luttrellstown was magic, indeed.
The resort also offers a host of private, on-site adventures for the nature lover in you. Options range from falconry to an authentic horse and hound experience. We tried the horse and hounds ourselves, and it was truly WOW-inducing. The animals and their expert handlers were incredible. As our editor-in-chief Angela Desveaux put it, “I have never witnessed a pack of dogs more behaved and in perfect control. It was truly a sight to behold.”
