Dominique and Martin met in their freshman year of high school. While neither can remember their first conversation, they both distinctly remember flirting throughout high school. “Martin ended up asking me out in our Junior year but I said no!” remembers Dominique. “It was a bit too early for me to have a boyfriend, but I secretly regretted saying no and thankfully he tried again in his second year of university and that time I was ready! We’ve been inseparable ever since.”
In the Fall of 2019, Martin proposed to Dominique at the very same park near his house where he had asked Dominique for a first date. “He blindfolded me and led me over to a spot with ‘MARRY ME?’ spelled out in big letters and a heart made out of white rose petals on the ground. “It was so sweet and I couldn’t hold back the tears. It was such a special time for both of us.”
The couple were married on July 31, 2021 in Toronto, Ontario with full-service planning (lovingly!) provided by the groom’s sister Lina Gobrail of Elegant Steps Events . The wedding was designed around a garden theme, inspired by the bride’s love of all-things-greenery.
The ceremony took place at The Church of the Virgin Mary & St. Athanasius. “Dominique always dreamt of having an aisle full of white petals. We created her vision by using 700 white roses which made it look like a white runner flowing down the aisle. In the middle of the church we included two white cherry blossom trees at the altar behind Martin and Dominique,” says event planner Lina Gobrail. The priest took the time to explain the Coptic Orthodox ceremony in English (which isn’t normally done) to make it easier for Dominique’s side of the family to understand the symbolism and traditions.
