Sarah and Shawn’s love story began when they were both working on a production of “Pride and Prejudice” with the Arts Club of Vancouver. Every night Sarah (an actress) would encounter Shawn (head of lighting) in the wings, “I often reminded him to not forget to get the lanterns hung, or had the lanterns ready for him to hang. It became a part of my pre-show routine,” shares Sarah.
The week leading up to the proposal, Sarah had a sneaking suspicion something was about to happen, so when the day came, Sarah had convinced herself it was just a ploy of Shawn’s to throw her off the scent. The two were soaking in the scenery at Iona Beach on a gorgeous, windy day and Shawn waited for Sarah to turn away and admire the view, before getting down on one knee. “I turned around as soon as I heard a teary Shawn saying, “Sarah…” from there I can’t remember the exact details but I do remember being so surprised and feeling like we were in our own little bubble of time together. It was perfect!”
When it came to planning her big day, Sarah didn’t have to look far for assistance! Her mother, CC, is the founder of ROA FLORAL EVENT & DESIGNS, and together with Sarah’s sister, Jamie (who helps spearhead the company) they provided full-service planning, floral, decor, and event design. “I would not have made it to my wedding day without her. After planning a wedding in less than four months and then having to re-plan it AGAIN one and a half weeks before the date, it could not have possibly been as amazing without her. Because of my Mom and her connections to the industry she made this day a dream come true,” shares the bride.

Sarah knew she didn’t want a traditional white gown for her big day and coincidentally the first gown she tried on at designer HANNAH TIKKANEN was the one! The gown was silk-satin in seafoam green and Sarah paired it with a hairpiece from Boutique 1861 in Montreal, a gift from her sister (and bridesmaid!) Jamie. Hair and makeup provided by Faces by Micah.
Sarah’s bouquet design had a sophisticated boho look and comprised white Majolika roses, Quicksand roses, pink and white Mondial roses, Protea Barbigera Ice Queen, Amaranthus Upright Bronze, and Eucalyptus. As a special touch, her mother, designer CC Roa, finished the bouquet with a sheer green ribbon she’d sourced on a trip to Paris three years prior and had been saving for a ‘special’ bride.
The ceremony took place outdoors in the venue’s vineyard, where Jamie Roa designed a unique floral arch, using a half-moon design on a gold metal sphere. It’s design was completed with large blooms of green and white hydrangeas from the Roa family garden (hand-picked by CC five days before the wedding!). The sphere was then adorned with pampas grass, pink and white Mondial roses, and gold fan palm.
Guest tables were decorated by the ROA FLORAL EVENT & DESIGNS team with long floral runners in the centre comprising local white hydrangeas, Mondial roses, Majolica Spray roses, in shades of pinks and whites, with air plants and eucalyptus as the base.
Sarah arranged for a special children’s seating area, designed with a low table and pillows for them to sit at. Zinnia blooms placed in vintage glass bottles and mason jar glasses with striped straws added a fun touch!
After dinner, Sarah changed into a tulle gown with a stunning train, also from designer HANNAH TIKKANEN, for the special ceremony where her sisters-in-law gave her a sash of their family tartan (to symbolize her joining of the Watson family!).
In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, the couple opted for a variety of donuts from Lee’s Donuts, Cartems and Duffin’s Donut.
