Love took flight for Mercedes and Antonio when they met for the first time at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Antonio, an Emirates employee was working the check-in counter and noticed Mercedes approaching the front of the queue. “We exchanged pleasantries and she turned on the charm to try and get some better seats for the 14-hour journey. It was at this point that we had a system freeze and check-in halted for several minutes,” says Antonio. “I took this opportunity to get to know Mercedes better. We asked each other about our mutual backgrounds, education, and work. I managed to get her an entire row for the flight, but I issued a different boarding pass. At the departure gate, I paged her to the counter and swapped the old pass with the new one, but I had her write her number down. Three weeks later we went on our first date.”
In 2018, the couple purchased a new-build home together. Every few months they would visit the site to check on the progress. On one such day in August of 2019, Mercedes was unaware that Antonio had an engagement ring in his bag. “While she was looking at the counters in the kitchen, I stayed behind her and took the ring out of my bag. I told her to turn and look at the tiles and when she turned I proposed,” shares Antonio. “I then said, ‘when we bought this home, we were boyfriend and girlfriend. When we move in, I want to call you my fiancée.’”
