Sarah and Dave’s love story began in the seventh grade when they first met. They even “dated” briefly for a couple of weeks in the eighth grade. Ultimately, Dave moved across the world to Cameroon, Africa, for all of high school. “While we tried to keep in touch as much as one could in the days of MSN messenger, given the spotty internet in Cameroon, this was bound for failure. But what I didn’t know is that Dave always thought I could be the ‘one,’ describes Sarah. “Fast forward a few years, we bumped into each other on our university’s campus. And the rest, as they say, was history. It’s been 20 years in the making, but we wouldn’t change our love story.”
Dave proposed to Sarah on Christmas Day, 2018. As the day unfolded, there were many curveballs including the fact that Dave woke up under the weather! Sarah was also panicky due to a prank she later learned was part of the plan. (Both sides of their family led her to believe they couldn’t make it for her home-cooked brunch that day, but as the morning unfolded they all started calling to say they’d had a change of heart and would be ‘right over.’ Talk about a mad scramble! After brunch, the present opening began. Sarah’s gift from Dave was a massive box, which had another beautifully wrapped box, followed by another box, and another box, and another box. “I couldn’t keep up with how many boxes I had opened, and I was laughing hysterically (as this is something I would do),” Sarah describes. “Before I knew it, the boxes started getting smaller and smaller, until it finally clicked.” The last box Sarah opened was a tiny shiny red box, followed by Dave’s beautiful proposal in front of their dearest family members. While the moment was beautiful, Dave then gave Sarah the flu, which resulted in pneumonia as a complication. Sarah spent the first two weeks engaged, sick in bed but “wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
