Sonia and Salil were not looking for love when they found each other. While both were enjoying their single lives, it all changed once Sonia came across Salil’s Instagram profile. “I found myself instantly intrigued by his adventurous lifestyle and appearance. I immediately thought to myself that I needed to meet him,” shares the now-bride. As luck would have it, the two shared a mutual friend who connected the two online on New Year’s Eve of 2017. On their first date, Sonia realized they had crossed paths before a few months earlier. “I had bought her a drink and asked for her number,” recalls the groom. “Her response to me was ‘If it’s meant to be, you will get it eventually.’ I guess it was meant to be after all!”
Salil proposed exactly one year later on December 31, 2018, in Hawaii. After many close calls of Sonia almost finding the ring, Salil hired a photographer and planned to do a photoshoot on Pa’ako Beach, otherwise known as “The Secret Beach.” As Sonia admired the gorgeous scenery, Salil got down on one knee, and she said yes!
The couple tied the knot on August 31, 2019, at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver in British Columbia.

Throughout the day, Sonia wore multiple creations by Shyamal & Bhumika, purchased at the House of Raina. The bride’s bracelets not only added an extra touch of colour to her ensemble but held special meaning as the 24K gold bangles were passed down from three generations and given to her by her mother.
Sonia and Salil’s celebration started with a bang! “Salil and I decided to have a traditional Hindu ceremony. However, we wanted our guests to experience a Hindu ceremony, unlike one they have ever attended before,” shares the bride. It was important to the couple that their guests were entertained at every moment, so they hosted Salil’s Baraat (the groom’s wedding procession) right in front of the JW Mariott Parq Vancouver. The street was closed to all vehicles entering and exiting for thirty minutes as Salil’s horse-drawn carriage arrived alongside drums, a band of bagpipes, and a dancing crowd of family and friends.

After the ceremony, guests were greeted to a modern, all-white wonderland! The ballroom was filled to the brim with ivory and crystal accents, including mirrored tabletops and an elegant head table. To further add to the reflective theme of the day, the entire dance floor was covered in a silver chrome vinyl. “Since the beginning, we wanted the theme of our wedding to follow a clean, modern, and airy feel as we both believe there is beauty in simplicity. We both envisioned our wedding as a fairy tale, as most couples do, but instead of the traditional, we hoped to take one that highlighted a “modern-day” fairy tale,” shares Sonia.
