Melissa and Alessandro’s wedding was a sophisticated affair with silver, dove grey, and white decor and floral elements. What really caught our attention were the panels of cream and white flowers scaling the walls of the reception space. Not only did these floral-covered walls set the tone for the stylish celebration, but their strategic placement (behind the sweetheart table) further enhanced the focal point of the night — the newlyweds.

        A Sweet Proposal

A Kinder Surprise egg shell is an unlikely place to hide an engagement ring, but on a Sunday afternoon while picnicking in Coronation Park, that’s exactly where Diana first laid eyes on her cushion-cut diamond sparkler. Loreto proposed in the park as a sweet reminder of their first date eight years earlier when he had given Diana the same treat (with the usual toy inside).

The pair were married on August 21, 2010.

The couple both love fashion and history so they chose vintage-inspired wedding day attire. “Loreto’s look was very ’60s and my dress had a very deco feel to it,” recalls Diana. The lacy v-neck Valentino gown with cap sleeves was purchased at Studio Sposa in Kleinburg, Ontario.

Diana’s three bridesmaids wore heather grey dresses from J. Crew.

“I love the grey and purple combination that has been popular in fashion and interiors the last couple of seasons so I wanted our wedding day to have this colour scheme,” recalls Diana.

       A Garden Affair

Following a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony, the reception was held at the Embassy Grand Convention Centre in Castlemore, Ontario.

Bruce Budway of Bruce Budway Interiors transformed the venue to resemble a lavish romantic garden in shades of mauve and violet. Tables overlaid with luxurious linens from Have A Seat were decorated with striking floral arrangements featuring garden roses in shades of mauve, violet and dusty rose arranged with purple hydrangea.

Whimsical additions were evident throughout the decor.

“I am ultra-feminine and wanted the room to have a romantic tone. This was achieved in the floral arrangements and all the little details around the room, including feathers, butterflies, birds and nests,” says Diana. “My favorite design detail at the reception were the boxes of wheatgrass with birds nests and tiny eggs. This little detail really made it feel like we were in a magical garden. The only thing missing were unicorns!”

A delicious five-tier cake by The Wedding Cake Shoppe featured a different flavour for each tier ranging from chocolate cake with mint buttercream to vanilla cake with mango buttercream. The cake topper was a pair of Japanese paper doll recreations of Diana and Loreto made by BooCoo Washi Art.

After their wonderful wedding, an exotic overseas honeymoon awaited the couple starting in Paris before they toured Egypt. “We began in Cairo and traveled to Abu Simbel, Aswan and Luxor. We ended our Egyptian tour in Sharm el Sheikh on
the Red Sea.”

The couple now reside in Vaughan, Ontario.

“We met at a nightclub one weekend while we were both in Niagara Falls with friends.
We started to chat and instantly connected. Our relationship started as a friendship
as we were both in different places of our lives but four years later we finally connected
romantically and have been in love and best friends ever since.”

How did Carlo propose?
“Carlo knows that I would have caught on the minute he did anything out of the ordinary so he decided he would propose on the spur of the moment. One summer evening we were just hanging out at a local park when we began to play tic tac toe(they had a large board there). Carlo promised that if I could beat him the reward would be great and it was! A beautiful diamond ring and Carlo on one knee proposing marriage and of course I screamed yes!”

Who was your favorite wedding vendor?
“Silvana Frammartino of Impulse Photography, such a sweet genuine person who really made the day incredible and gave us such stunning wedding images that we will cherish forever.”

Where did your ‘getting ready’ photos take place?
“My parents had built a new custom hoome and it actually served as our location for pictures.  A lot of the furniture we purchased was inspired by the wedding theme – like the upholstered tufted bed and the 4 claw antique style bathtub.  It fit the theme perfectly and when we purchased them we knew that our photographer was going to use them while shooting and she did.  It was crazy that the wedding actually made us look for specific pieces of furniture!”

What was the most unexpected moment of the day?
“The most unexpected moment of the day was arriving to my parent’s home for the afternoon luncheon and hearing a violinist playing on the patio.  I had no idea that my mom had arranged for this and it was a total surprise.  I loved it and that too made the luncheon even more classy and special.”

What was your favorite moment of the day?
“Dancing to our first song was something we will never forget, the musician sang the song “Im Yours” by Jason Mraz so beautifully and it gave us a chance for the first time that night to be just the two of us, dancing so peacefully in love.”

What advice do you have for other brides?
“My advice would be to stay true to yourself. Do what you and your fiancee think is right for every aspect of your wedding. It truly is a once in a lifetime experience and the two of you should be the ones making the decisions that make you happy. Try and customize as much as possible to make it even more special and reflective of the people you are and your personal styles.”

Describe Your Dress
“Ivory Silk Tissue Organza Gown by Vera Wang! It was very whimsical and soft. It was made personal by having a custom made belt that sat on a sash at waist. The belt was a collection of brooches. I
wore a vanilla sash for the ceremony and changed into a black sash for the reception to
match my maids and decor of wedding. I also chose to have two sashes because I had loved
both colours so much and thought ‘Why not just wear both?’ Changing the sash was something
that ended up being a hit, people loved the ‘two looks’ ”

Was there a specific theme or mood you were trying to achieve on your wedding day?
“Inspiration was Modern Vintage Glam – the entire venue draped in white, tablecloths pewter with vintage inspired silver runners, Chiavari silver chairs, white and ivory lush bouquets, lots of sparkles and crystals, feathers, and a custom designed dance floor.”

How did you personalize your wedding day?
“Customization! A custom dance floor, custom wedding cake design, custom belt for my wedding dress and flower girl dresses (custom made by Carmens Designs) – everything was customized to our personal styles and to fit with the theme.”

What was your favorite ‘design’ detail?
“My favorite detail was the custom designed dance floor. It brought so much ambience to the room and just made all the difference in setting our wedding decor apart from other glamourous weddings we had seen in the past.”

Describe your cake
“My cake was custom designed. A five-tier square white cake with a black “Vera Wang Sash” wrapped around the middle. This was intentionally designed to match the one embellishment on my gown as I wanted my cake to be personalized as much as possible.”

“The Embassy Grand helped us design an amazing wedding menu. Our evening began with a cocktail
party featuring interactive food stations — sushi bar, panini bar, stir fry station, mini bison burgers and seafood martinis. Our guests LOVED this! Our meal featured two entrees, a seafood entree (sea-bass with butternut squash risotto), and a meat entree (a duo of lamb and filet mignon).”
