Emma & Aaron true love. true luxury.

Emma and Aaron first met at a Team BC beach volleyball training camp in 2007. They were engaged four years later in Vancouver, after an elaborate proposal that involved the covert assistance of Emma’s family and her modeling agent, Liz Bell. The group helped Aaron pull off an incredible surprise.

Initially, Liz sent an email to Emma about an “opportunity” to model at GROUSE MOUNTAIN RESORT for a German client. Emma was reluctant to take the job (as the timing was close to her final exams) but she agreed after her mom insisted the scenery would be “so lovely in the evening for a shoot!” Ironically, Emma then decided to ask Aaron if he’d join her on the mountaintop after the shoot for a date. She was less than impressed when he turned down the idea! On the day of the ‘shoot’ Emma arrived early but there was no sign of a photoshoot crew. Finally she received a text message from the ‘client’ asking her to meet at the ski rental area. As she made her way over, her phone rang.

It was Aaron. “I’m sorry but I can’t talk because I’m just about to meet the client!” Emma said. Aaron replied, “I think you should turn around.” As she slowly followed his instructions, there he was, standing on top of a cliff above her. Still thinking that her client was about to appear for the shoot, Emma remained a true professional. “I have to meet the team! I have to go! I’ll come say hi in a bit!” Aaron laughed and explained she was there to meet him. A very confused Emma watched as Aaron got down on one knee and proposed with a vintage engagement ring. “I said yes, and jumped into his arms.”

Just then, Emma’s sister Alana stumbled down the side of the hill madly taking pictures while laughing and crying.

Corinne Colledge of FILOSOPHI EVENTS was commissioned by Emma and Aaron to provide full-service wedding planning and design for their January 5, 2013 wedding day that had a decidedly vintage feel.

Emma wore a gown by Jenny Packham from BISOU BRIDAL. Her accessories included a headpiece by Jennifer Behr and metallic pumps from Manolo Blahnik. She also wore a sapphire bracelet that belonged to her great-grandmother and drop earrings that were a gift from Aaron.

Aaron wore a classic Calvin Klein suit. Emma’s bridesmaids were dressed in Monique Lhuillier “latte” frocks in varying styles and wore shoes from NINE WEST. Their bracelets from TIFFANY & CO. and earrings from BLUE RUBY were gifted to them by Emma on the morning of the wedding.

The wedding ceremony took place at ST. ANDREWS-WESLEY UNITED CHURCH. Emma’s dad, Rick Hansen—Canadian Paralympian and founder of the RICK HANSEN FOUNDATION who is famous for his Man In Motion tour—accompanied his daughter down the aisle as hundreds of candles cast a romantic glow. Each guest was also given an individual candle when they arrived.

The wedding reception was held at THE ROUNDHOUSE COMMUNITY ARTS AND RECREATION CENTRE in Vancouver’s Yaletown.

Corinne Colledge of Filosophi Events designed the space to mimic a fairytale setting using soft twinkling lights and fabric draped across the wide ceiling beams of the venue. Draping and lighting was provided by REEL SILKS. The candles were from WICKS AND WAX and the linens were from CHAIR DECOR. Corinne also incorporated Emma’s favourite animal (elephant) by using subtle references throughout the design. (For instance there were elephant vases, cookie favors in the shape of elephants and an elephant spotlight above the cake on the brick wall).

Nicola Adam and Lisa Ujimoto designed the florals for the wedding, and sourced flowers from WEST COAST FLORAL GROWERS AND DISTRIBUTORS LTD. DJ Darren provided music for the evening that had guests of all ages on the dance floor. Guests were talking about the “perfect mix of music” for weeks after the wedding!

The cake and favors were created by ANNA ELIZABETH CAKES. The cake featured sugar-lace details and an edible pearl design at the base inspired by Emma’s spectacular gown.

SAVOURY CHEF FOODS catered the event. “The food was amazing and fresh and the service was outstanding!” says Emma.

Late night fun included a candy bar with some of the couple’s favourite candies (which included a jar of Dutch “droppies” (licorice candies) in honour of Aaron’s Dutch roots. A video guestbook by ADAM AND KEV PHOTOGRAPHY was another fun activity for guests. But, the biggest hit of the night was the late night snack surprise. McDonalds delivered breakfast food at 11pm!

The couple was completely satisfied with their celebration and credit their event planner Corinne from FILOSOPHI EVENTS for making their dream wedding a reality. “Every tiny detail was exactly as I’d imagined it!” says the bride.

Emma and Aaron had a luxurious honeymoon at SMUGGLERS COVE RESORT & SPA in St. Lucia. The couple reports that their holiday was a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.
