John and Maryem first met through friends in high school but lost touch when they both moved away for University. Once they’d both moved home and begun working, they reconnected through a recreational volleyball league and began spending time together outside of the league. They quickly realized how much they enjoyed each other’s company, and before they knew it, they were inseparable!
When it came time to propose, John planned a lunch date “somewhere nice,” keeping the location a surprise. Once the couple had arrived at their first stop — a helicopter tour — Maryem pretended to be excited to match John’s mood, but was secretly terrified! “Fun fact: I am an awful flier,” shares Maryem. “We waited for our tour and up we went across Niagara Falls and over wine country — although slightly terrifying, it was stunning!” The couple landed at Maryem’s favourite vineyard, Two Sisters Winery, feeling like celebrities as they stepped off the helicopter. John took Maryem on a walk through the vineyard where he asked her to marry him, and when they returned their families were waiting to celebrate the engagement!
