Sonia and Bhargav were first introduced through friends in 2014 but the casual meeting resulted in no more than a mutual follow on social media! Fast forward to December of 2017 and Sonia was on a flight home from Australia, where she was enrolled in dental school. The character in the film she was watching on the plane reminded her strongly of Bhargav and when she fell asleep, she had a dream they were fighting a zombie apocalypse together. Bemused at how random it all was, he stayed in her mind for the next few days, until she eventually messaged him on Facebook, and the rest is history!
After an on-off relationship, while they juggled their respective careers with the reality of long-distance (neither wanting to compromise!) the pair finally reconnected in the middle of the global pandemic. Sonia intercepted a message about herself, which Bhargav had intended for a friend, and it led to them starting a conversation again. “We were brutally honest with each other and were able to find a common ground built on shared values. We made an effort to see each other in the middle of the pandemic even while the US-Canada border was shut down and we haven’t looked back since,” shares Sonia.
The proposal took place just after New Year in 2021. Bhargav had crossed the border to visit Sonia in Vancouver and the pair were enjoying a winter getaway in Whistler. While out on a snowmobile excursion one night, Bhargav surprised Sonia as they were taking a scenic photo overlooking Whistler village. “While the guide appeared to be figuring out the best angle to take the photo, Bhargav and I were positioning ourselves and he asked me “hey what are you doing for the rest of your life?” I replied with “what are you talking about? I thought we were spending it together?!” He then proceeded to get down on one knee and ask the words every girl waits for.
The couple was married on September 3, 2021, with Ishita Kalia-Hayer of A Stylish Event providing full-service planning and design assistance.

For the ceremony Sonia wore a stunning bridal lehenga set from Rimple & Harpreet Narula. She paired it with two dupattas, a light pink embroidered one to cover her head and a heavier dark pink one that she draped across the lehenga.
For the ceremony backdrop, three large gold ‘window’ panels were covered with florals in bold lilacs, lavenders, pinks and oranges. A sea of pillows in shades of peach, lavender and blush tones were placed across the floor for guests to sit on. The ceremony took place in the garden of the bride’s family residence. The couple had a traditional Sikh ceremony, followed by a modified Hindu ceremony.
The bride’s sister-in-laws wore varying shades of pink for the ceremony, complementing Sonia’s bridal lehenga. Evan Orion of Flowerz and Koncept Event Design provided floral, decor, and event design service.
Koncept Event Design lit the entire space with bold orange and purple mood lighting and added vibrant touches with table linens and cushions in oranges and purples. Gold Dior chairs, modern gold candelabras, and gold leaf charger plates completed the look. The ceremony tent was transformed into a lounge area.
