One of Canada’s hottest event venues, The Globe and Mail Centre has earned its reputation as an upscale, modern, Toronto oasis for luxury brides. But what is it really like to have a wedding at this spectacular venue? Scroll down to read The Globe’s Event Manager, Luis Cabrera exclusive interview with WedLuxe about the origin story of the venue, the most memorable wedding they’ve ever hosted and 2019 wedding trends!

Thank you for speaking with us! First off, can you tell us a bit about The Globe and Mail Centre?
The Globe and Mail Centre is a breathtaking event venue offering elegant spaces with panoramic city and lake views, just minutes from the downtown core. Not only is a modern space filled with natural light, but the Level 17 Event Hall & Lounge and The Terrace are also an incomparable space for cocktail receptions. We can easily host up to 300 seated or 400 standing guests.

The Globe and Mail is known for its national newspaper. How and when did the Globe and Mail Centre get started?
The Globe and Mail have produced events for many years in venues across the country. When we were making plans to move into a new headquarters, The Globe wanted to create a space to welcome visitors, partners and bring events in-house to a beautiful, state-of-the-art environment. We are now proud to offer a space to host these world-class events and as well as a wide range of business events with partners. When we are not hosting weddings, we host all kinds of thought-provoking conferences, as well as galas, receptions, and more.

Can you tell us a bit about the most memorable wedding you have ever hosted?
Choosing the most memorable wedding is difficult because we have hosted such a wide range of incredible weddings and they are all so different. Fleur Weddings planned one of the more memorable weddings that comes to mind. They always think outside the box and for this particular wedding, they had a very unique setup that included a huge ‘S’ shaped table and beautiful rose floral arrangements adorning the tables. It was stunning and a totally new dinner set up for the venue.

You must see a lot of weddings! What trends have been significant in 2019? What trends are you predicting will be significant for weddings in 2020?
In 2019, we have seen many bold statement pieces, from very bright, rich colors to lots of textures (such as lace and velvet) with linens and fabric. We have also seen very unique black wedding cakes that serve as additional statement pieces.
As for 2020, overall, what I am gathering so far is that many couples and planners are mentioning that they want to keep things simple, clean, and elegant. My prediction is 2020 will be a year filled with lots of classic, timeless weddings.

What is your process when someone books The Globe and Mail Centre for their wedding?
When someone books The Globe and Mail Centre, they are introduced to one of our amazing event managers who begins the planning process with the couple. Depending on how far out the wedding is, they may get started right away. I make sure to connect with the event manager to provide them with all of the details regarding the couple’s special date that I have gathered throughout the touring phase. From there, our managers work closely with the couples/planners to set up site tours, provide any information as required. We then develop floor plans and an event order that serves as the ‘master document’ for the day of the wedding.

What is The Globe and Mail Centre currently working on and what’s next?
We are always striving to learn, grow, and stay on top of trends in the industry. With that, we are constantly evaluating our processes, seeing what works, and what we can do better. We are always open to collaborating with planners for photoshoots and continue to put our name out there because surprisingly, many people are still unaware of our venue.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about The Globe and Mail Centre?
Yes! While we are well known for our spectacular views and modern space, I want your readers to know that this is only the tip of the iceberg. We pride ourselves in ensuring we are providing the best of service for our couple’s special day. We are continually working on improving ourselves and providing next-level service. All of our vendors and caterers are specially curated to ensure only the best of service is offered. So, although you can’t beat this view, our goal is to provide the best service for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
