Wedding Dress Shopping Tips & Trends From Andrea Anastasiou

Newly engaged and searching for the perfect gown? We got in touch with Andrea Anastasiou, fashion stylist and founder of White Toronto and White Montreal, for some steal-worthy wedding dress shopping tips! Andrea also dishes on her favourite bridal trends for 2015, including delicate sleeves and daring backless dresses.

WedLuxe: How early into planning a wedding should a bride book her first gown shopping appointment?

Andrea Anastasiou: We recommend a bride start the process no earlier than one year out from her wedding day or 8-10 months at the least. A year offers up the best lead time – it allows her to shop a selection of stores, distil her vision, and order with an appropriate timeline.

WL: What should a bride bring to her appointment?

AA: A bride should bring an open mind to her first appointment! It’s wonderful to have an established vision with Pinterest research and designer favourites to help convey what she likes to her consultant. However, on a first appointment we recommend she try a variety of silhouettes, she may discover shapes she hadn’t considered that look great on!

WL: What do you think is the number one mistake brides make when shopping for their dress?

AA: Brides can end up bringing too many people to the appointment. What a girl should consider is that too many opinions can actually be quite frustrating vs. helpful. Going to the initial appointment with a select, trusted few allows for the chance to figure out what she wants and to avoid it becoming about what everyone else “sees” her in.

WL: What are some trends you’re seeing for the coming season that might help a bride narrow down her search?

AA: There are WONDERFUL trends happening, and there’s something for every bride to fall in love with! Backless dresses are currently the most coveted choice, and available options do not disappoint. Look to designers like Galia Lahav, Oscar de la Renta, and Monique Lhuillier who pay great attention to the backside! Sleeves are gaining momentum in the bridal dress world as well. Brides have been asking for delicate sleeves as an alternative to strapless looks, and now designers are delivering! Another huge trend for Spring and Fall 2015 is the idea of separates (as seen above from Reem Acra Fall 2015) – allowing a bride to truly customize her look. Designers showed everything from cropped lace tops to embellished corsets mixed with different shaped bottoms. This is a wonderful way for a bride to assemble a look all her own and explore more than one option for her wedding day.

WL: Finally, what words of wisdom would you give to a bride who is struggling to find her dress?

AA: In addition to starting the dress-trying process with a good confident (or even solo!), and being initially open to a variety of shapes, a bride should be realistic about her budget. She should allow her consultant to suggest options, since they know their merchandise best and can make unemotional suggestions to help.
