Interview with Tony Ward

Designer Tony Ward grew up with a father in the business and learned how to create his stunning gowns at some of Europe’s most luxe design houses. On his first trip to Canada for a trunk show at Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay, the gown designer and couturier spoke with us about his romantic aesthetic.

WedLuxe: What type of bride do you design for?
Tony Ward: I try to cater to a very romantic bride. The gowns aren’t very aggressive, I use softer materials that are a bit architectural.

WL: What are your favourite fabrics to work with?
TW: I work with lace, tulle, and sheer georgette. I like to use more transparent materials without being too sexy.

WL: You studied under so many prominent designers, grew up with a couturier father, and design your own couture and ready-to-wear collections; what prompted  you start a bridal line?
TW: Our European clients started to ask for bridal gowns that weren’t as costly as some of our couture pieces. We did a trial collection that really catered to the European market. I then traveled to Japan and the US and found clients who loved our designs as well. We’ve found that the gowns that work in Europe also work throughout Asia and North America.

WL: What inspired your current collection?
TW: It’s based on flowers and the transparent overlay fabrics. Again, it’s all very romantic and geared towards that type of woman.

WL: Your gowns have been worn by Annette Bening, Zosia Mamet, Mariah Carey, Aubrey Plaza, and many others; who has been your favourite celebrity to dress?
TW: I loved dressing Whitney Houston! She wore one of my couture gowns when she was awarded the BET Lifetime Achievement Award.

WL: What are you looking forward to most on your first trip to Canada?
TW: I’m very excited to meet the Canadian bride! It will be great to find out what they love and what I can make to cater to them in future collections.
