Yael and Dan met in Israel in December, 2004. Both were visiting the country via ‘Birthright’—a charity sponsored heritage trip for young adults. “We got to know each other quite well on the trip and when we returned to Toronto we kept in touch and our romance blossomed from there,” recalls Yael.
The wedding proposal took place six years later in New York City. “We went for a stroll in Central Park to Strawberry Fields which was important to Dan because we both love the Beatles. Dan got down on one knee and quoted a lyric from one of our favourite songs by Dave Matthews. I knew as soon as he said it that he was proposing. It was a very exciting moment
The pair worked with event planner Naomi Serkin of Naomi Serkin and Associates to create a fun and whimsical wedding day with a design and decor palette inspired by Dan’s favourite color: baby blue. The wedding took place on October 3, 2010 at Four Seasons Toronto.
Yael wore a baby blue silk chiffon gown by Reem Acra from White Toronto. It was encrusted with beads and pearls and had a full skirt draped over layers of tulle. She wore her grandmother’s diamond and pearl necklace which had also been worn by her sister Lily, at her wedding a few years earlier.
A pair of diamond and aquamarine earrings were made by a family friend. A sparkly pair of Prada Chandelier sandals completed the look.
Yael’s bouquet by Nous Designs featured a personalized handkerchief monogrammed with ‘Yael & Dan’ in baby blue thread.
Dan wore a Gucci suit. He and his groomsmen wore fabric boutonnieres made by Cathy B designs. “I love Lanvin, especially their floral and pearl accessories, so we decided to recreate the look in our wedding colors. We worked with Cathy Belzberg, owner of Cathy B, and her amazing team of jewelry designers to create a piece for each individual bridesmaid. The boutonnieres were specialized with different fabrics for the men,” recalls Yael.
The ceremony took place underneath a chupah canopy with very special significance for Yael as it featured needlepoint lovingly stitched by her mother and her Aunt Toby. It was moved behind the head table after the ceremony next to another chupah canopy with needlepoint by Yael’s late grandmother.
One of the stand-out details of the reception (and Yael’s favourite detail of the day) was the use of beautiful cakes by
|Together, William Fulghum of William Fulghum Design Associates and Laurie Goldhar provided full-service design and decor for the reception at the Four Seasons Toronto. The pair directed the floral team from Nous Designs to complete the soft and romantic look.
Aside from baby blue, the other signature component to Yael and Dan’s wedding was music. “Music is very important to us. Dan is the musical director, and guitarist for Justin Bieber. We incorporated some of our favourite music into the procession with songs by Van Morrison, The Cure, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton and the Beatles.”
Later in the evening there were performances by Dan’s father Jeff and brother Jonah. Dan got on stage and played a rocking version of ‘Sweet Child O’Mine’ and then a jam with Justin Bieber. “Dan has been on tour with Justin Bieber for some time. Justin was so excited about the wedding and wanted to perform,” recalls Yael.
A late night breakfast of mini French toast and mini pancakes was served as the guests danced the night away.
For a fun twist on the usual ‘cake-cutting’ tradition (and surrounded by a room full of cakes used as centrepieces), Yael and Dan opted for a seven-tier stand brimming with donuts glazed with baby blue icing from Hermes Bakery.
The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii at the Halekulani and the Four Seasons Hualalai.
“Dan had to go back on tour right after the wedding so we were lucky the next stop was Hawaii. The first few days Dan still had a couple of shows but then we had plenty of time for some rest and relaxation together in Hawaii. We then met back up with the tour in Vancouver and went onto San Francisco for a couple of days,” recalls Yael.
They now reside in Toronto where Yael is a fashion consultant and Dan continues his musical work with Justin Bieber.
