|Brendan and Monika grew up twenty minutes away from each other in Ottawa but didn’t meet for the first time until four years ago. At the time Brendan was living in Toronto playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. A mutual friend introduced them and the rest is history.

Brendan wore a custom charcoal grey suit by John Corallo from The Coop Ink in Toronto. The groomsmen wore charcoal Hugo Boss suits. Each bridesmaid wore a heather grey silk dress from BCBG and carried mauve rose bouquets by Teena Bedard of Bel Fiore Flowers.
What was your favourite moment on your wedding day?
“My favourite moment was marrying my best friend. Then after that would be having all my
close friends and family there to celebrate with. It was such a fun day and I’ll cherish it forever.”
The Great Hall at the National Gallery of Canada was transformed from an intimate candlelit ceremony location into a fun cocktail reception decorated in shades of purple. Tall floral arrangements of white dahlias, purple orchids, dark purple freesia, and pink roses dotted the room along with hundreds of candles.The cocktail-style reception was an opportunity for Monika and Brendan to offer their guests a fabulous selection of delicacies catered by Tulips and Maple. Highlights of the luxe hors d’oeuvre selections included crab croquettes with chipotle remoulade, aged Quebec brebis on walnut cracker, pulled pork bbq brisket sandwiches, warm mushroom and black truffle risotto cakes and jumbo shrimp with basil pernod butter sautéed on site (just to name a few). For late night fare, guests were served a fun combination of mini burgers, sweet potato fries and a milk shake trio.
Eggplant purple linen from Groovy Linens covered low cocktail, café and round tables. Christy Ann Moore from Tagz Stationery designed guestbook cards that were tied with a purple ribbon to the wishing tree at the front of the room.
| Linda Bartlett from The Girl With The Most Cake created a three-tier cake with two layers of carrot cake (Brendan’s favourite) and one layer of chocolate. An entire table of individually designed mini cakes was set out for the guests to enjoy at the party, or they could take one home. Flavours included chocolate, vanilla, carrot and lemon.
“Brendan and I really just wanted to make our wedding fun. We wanted it to be a real party and celebration of the day and a representation of us as a couple. We didn’t want anything too serious or structured. We wanted great food, great drinks, great décor and a sense of comfort for our guests.”
The couple took two honeymoons. The first was at the Hotel Quintessence in Mt. Tremblant, Quebec. The second trip took them to London, England where they stayed in the Royal Garden Hotel.
The couple now reside in Russia where Brendan is playing hockey. In the off-season the couple live in Ottawa near both of their families.
