Erin & Robert TRUE LOVE. TRUE LUXURY.
Erin Hawkins and Robert Somers were married on July 7, 2012 in Toronto, Ontario. Both the ceremony and reception took place at the bride’s family home—a dream come true for Erin—who had always envisioned her wedding day taking place in the backyard of the house she had grown up in. Event planner Melissa Haggerty of SPECTACULARSPECTACULAR worked closely with the bride and her mother throughout the planning of the wedding.
Erin’s mother acted as a key contact person during the planning when Erin found herself dealing with a chronic illness throughout the engagement period. “Not only did my mother put together the most beautiful day we could ever ask for, she has been nothing but a rock for us in all aspects of our lives. We couldn’t have done anything without her love, patience, and hard work,” Erin lovingly notes.
“There is nothing quite as personal as having a wedding at home,” says Erin, of her choice of venues. To that end, every detail was personalized starting with a photograph of the back of the house (which was the location for the ceremony and reception). The image was printed on a save-the-date and carried through all of the stationery. “Even though it was subtle and many people may not have seen the connection until the wedding day, it set the scene,” notes Erin. The invitations and stationery were created by PANTRY PRESS, in shades of pale grey and lilac; the same two colours which were used predominantly throughout the entire event decor.
Erin wore an ivory gown by Monique Lhuillier called “Candy.” The gown featured hundreds of tiny ivory and gold sequins that cascaded down the bodice onto the layers of tulle.
The dress was purchased at renowned Toronto bridal boutique, DINA ALONZI. Erin’s long veil was also designed by Monique Lhuillier. A pair of Christian Louboutin brushed gold platform pumps from DAVIDS perfectly complemented the gold detail in the gown.
To represent her ‘something borrowed,’ Erin wore her mother’s yellow and white diamond earrings with pearls, and a bracelet with pearls and diamonds, both designed by Michael DaCosta from FORTUNE’S FINE JEWELLERS. She also wore a special wedding gift from Robert—an Hermes H bracelet.
Robert wore a Paul Smith suit from HOLT RENFREW.

The all-white outdoor ceremony was witnessed by guests who sat atop the family pool! It was covered with a clear plexiglass floor, by Bill Fulghum of WILLIAM FULGHUM DESIGN (who provided full-service design management for the entire event). Fragrant white roses (in full bloom), placed in custom-designed white wooden backdrops, formed a waterfall pattern behind the bride and groom who exchanged vows on a beautiful balcony. The balcony railings were also covered in the same design, with more white roses. As the couple exited the ceremony, white flowered confetti was thrown in the air by exuberant friends and family.
After the ceremony, guests sipped on cocktails and enjoyed delicious passed hors d’oeuvres and a featured chilled oyster and shrimp table, all presented by NORTH 44 under a custom-built cocktail tent.
The tent was draped in pale grey fabric and accented with oversized custom-made white paper flower mobiles by Gisele of STERLING KJARGAARD. The tent also featured large white chandeliers and
several groupings of soft crushed-velvet sofas and ottomans from CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE RENTALS. Paired with mirrored tables, it created an intimate seating area for the guests. “Event designer Bill Fulghum wanted to create a different experience in each area of the venue,” says Erin. “Every detail was planned from the spot where the guests received lemonade and place cards, to the pristine white ceremony and the cool grey cocktail tent leading up to the lavender reception.”
Moving from the cocktail tent to a second reception tent (underneath a covered pathway), guests found themselves underneath a breathtaking floral ceiling. The design by Giselle Sterling of STERLING KJARGAARD, was an amazing sight to behold. One end to the other was covered with thousands of stems of lavender wisteria. Giselle also worked with more than 1000 fresh roses for the dining table arrangements. Underfoot was a beautiful lavender carpet, which was later donated to HABITAT FOR HUMANITY.
A CATERED AFFAIR
A kitchen tent was erected between the cocktail and reception tents for Chef Mark McEwen of NORTH 44 and his team to created a scrumptious dinner. Guests could choose from filet of beef, trout, or sweet pea ravioli. The entire meal was gluten-free (“not that most guests knew this,” says Erin). “Everyone commented how delicious and piping hot everything was.”
Children’s meals were served in bento boxes and featured caesar salad, chicken fingers, pasta, and fries. “Having children participate in the wedding party really added to the day. They were adorable, well behaved and excited to be in our wedding. There were so many great moments with them that really made our day. We were honoured to share our day with the younger generation,” says Erin.
“My favourite design detail was the wisteria hanging from the ceiling in the reception tent. It was especially magical to have our first dance under it.” -ERIN
The cake by BOBBETTE AND BELLE featured a pale lavender fondant covered with a white trellis design and cascading sugar wisteria. Bobbette and Belle made the cake and all the sweets gluten-free because the bride and flower girls are celiac. “Our flower girls were jumping up and down with excitement when they found out they could eat the cake,” Erin recalls. Lavender boxes were on hand so guests could take home candies from the sweets table.
During the reception, videographer Bruce Patterson and his team from CLOUD NINE CREATIVE showed a same-day video edit. “Our guests were blown away to watch a video of things that just happened hours before, and it told the story of our wedding day in such a sweet way. The day went by so fast, I am glad we will have the video to relive it whenever we want.”
Erin and Rob enjoyed a mini-moon in Fisher Island, Florida. The pair plan on an extended dream honeymoon to Australia and Fiji when Erin’s health recovers.
